You may have heard that MCA (Adam Yauch) of the Beastie Boys passed away at the young age of 47 a few days ago. He had been battling cancer.
From what I can tell, the last concert the Beastie Boys did together was Bonnaroo 2009. Last month, April 14th, the Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Sadly, just in time.
MCA was a groundbreaking musician and figure who did a lot more than just complement the Beastie Boys. Check out a little quote from a nice entry about Adam from a longtime Brooklyn native:
I’ve had the “Who’s your favorite Beastie?” discussion many times with many people, and the general consensus always seems to wind up being all of them. But if you break it down, you do it a little like the Beatles—and Yauch was the George Harrison of the Beasties. Maybe you wanted to date Ad-Rock and party with Mike D, but MCA is the one you wanted to get deep with. He’s the one you wanted to philosophize about life with over a nice vegan dinner. He’s the one you wanted to talk to about art and New York and basketball and Buddhism. MCA, what up?
I don’t think the Beastie Boys have a star on the Walk of Fame (could be wrong?) but Adam Yauch reportedly stopped at Burl Ives’ star on day while walking down Hollywood Boulevard. “That cat was dope,” he said. RIP MCA.
